Which country is technologically more advanced - Japan or Germany?

Japan, I've been to both places, Germany is comparable to a rural area of the U.S., while Japan is completely modernized and high tech. Germany hasn't really had any technological innovations in the last few decades while Japan has continued to invent and put new products on the market, and their populous is more atuned to using modern technology in everyday life.
