What causes lower abdominal pain that goes from one side to the other side?

it feels like a sharp pain that goes straight across. I went to the doctor but he said he wasn't for sure what it was but thought that it might be from a past surgery I had in 2001! I had gastric by-p and i have some "NOT A LOT" of loose skin hanging. What do you think?
